3-Prong Sustainable
Energy System
Using the electrical engineering and computer science skills I developed over my time in the BSE program, I have since been working on a 3-prong sustainable solution to dramatically reduce the global shipping industry’s carbon footprint.
I aim to decrease the fuel consumption of cargo ships by means of a 3-prong approach combining solar, wind, and hydroelectric power options to maximize the effective sustainability of ships.
The insights of one of my biggest influences, Nikola Tesla, have taught me that ships drink fossil fuel while literally floating through currents of energy within the water and the wind around them, and through solar energy during daylight. Combining Tesla’s insight that our world is holistic with the already existing energy technologies of today made me realize that new technology isn’t necessary to create sustainable planet-friendly systems to power modern civilization.
Big ships present a major opportunity to recapture these lost energies. The global shipping industry burns the lowest grade fuel and spews out 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting even 1% will majorly combat the effects of climate change.
